Completing their trip to the Great Northwest, the Cerritos College women's soccer team recorded their second straight 4-0 victory. The Falcons (2-0-0) defeated Spokane (WA) Community College on Sunday and will continue their pre-season road trip when they travel to Fresno City College to take on the defending CCCAA State Champions at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Against the Sasquatch, Cerritos scored all four of their goals in the first half and then controlled possession of the ball the rest of the way. The scoring started in the eighth minute when sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) cleared the ball to midfield, where sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) took possession. Moving the ball along the left side of the field, she worked her way past three defenders until she spotted sophomore Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine) at the top of the six-yard box, where the play resulted in a goal.
Maintaining dominance of the game, the Falcons added to their lead just two minutes later when sophomore Gisselle Jimenez (Long Beach Millikan HS) connected with freshman Claudia Paz (Huntington Park HS) at the top of the box. After controlling the ball, Paz took a shot across the net and beat the keeper to double the team's lead. Not letting up, it was a 3-0 game in the 22nd minute when Carr picked up a streaking Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) and fed her as she was making a run inside the box. She finished the play with a one-timer that found the back of the net.
Prior to the end of the first half, Cerritos made it a 4-0 game, as sophomore Brianna Yepez (Paramount HS) spotted sophomore Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) at the top of the 18-yard box. Playing with her back to the net, Ramirez worked her way around and got off a shot that gave the team their commanding lead. It was the third goal of the season for Ramirez, while the two helpers by Carr give her three through the first two games. Rodriguez earned her second consecutive shutout and made three saves.
