Taking on a talented Rio Hondo College squad, the Cerritos College women's soccer team scored in the first minute of the game to set the tone on their way to a 4-0 South Coast Conference crossover game on Friday. The Falcons (18-0-0), ranked #1 in the country and the state, have now outscored their opponents, 106-1 and have two regular season games remaining. They will host El Camino College at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday in a South Division match.
Getting the team on the board early in the game, freshman Gabriela Jimenez (Long Beach Jordan HS) sent a lead pass to sophomore Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine), who broke past a pair of Roadrunner (10-2-5) defenders and scored her 25th goal of the season. She would add her 26th in the 68th minute when she converted a penalty kick after sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) was brought down in the 18-yard box.
It was the dangerous combination of Camacho and Carr that accounted for the other two goals of the game, with Carr collecting her 38th and 39th goals of the season. In the 14th minute, Camacho crossed a pass to Carr, who was given enough space to settle the ball and take a low, hard shot under the diving leg of Rio Hondo goalkeeper Izalla Delgadilo.
With the game coming down to the final minute, a lead pass from Camacho turned into a foot race, with Carr getting to the ball before Delgadillo (nine saves), which left her all along in front of an open net.
Rio Hondo did cause the Falcons some troubles in the second half, and possessed the ball enough to get off seven shots. Cerritos turned the ball over a few times, and took chances on defense, which allowed the Roadrunners to get deep into Falcon territory. Sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS), who made four saves, was very aggressive in the net and left her area multiple times to cover up loose balls and possible scoring chances.
