Continuing their dominance over their opponents, the Cerritos College women's soccer team improved to 10-0-0 on the season after a 5-0 South Coast Conference South Division win over El Camino College on Friday. The Falcons (3-0-0 in SCC South Division) did not allow the Warriors (4-6-0, 2-2-0) a shot attempt on the day, while taking an astounding 41 shots. The team will now host Long Beach City College (4-3-1, 3-0-0) at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are currently tied for first place in the division.
From the outset of the game, Cerritos attacked the El Camino defense and spent the majority of the game in their zone. The offensive output was especially impressive, especially after finding out All-American Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) would be missed for the remainder of the season due to an injury. That didn't slow down the offensive juggernaut that is the combination of sophomores Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) and Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine). The two continued their torrid scoring pace, as they combined for four goals and an assist on the day.
Cerritos scored their first goal of the game in the 19th minute off what El Camino thought was a foul on goalkeeper Joelle Niimi inside the box. Carr, who was playing the ball, redirected it to Camacho who was alone in the box and headed the ball home into the open net to make it 1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Carr made it 2-0 after a cross from Gabriela Jimenez (Long Beach Jordan HS) in the 29th minute. Jimenez moved the ball down the right side of the field before sending her cross to Carr. Prior to halftime, Carr added her second goal of the game to make it 3-0 right before halftime after one-timing a shot on a cross from sophomore Brianna Yepez (Paramount HS) from the 30 yard line.
At the beginning of the second half, the Falcons found the back of the net for the fourth time on the day, as Jimenez recorded her second assist of the day when she found Camacho at the top of the box, and she was able to chip the ball past Niimi, who made 10 saves on the day. Freshman Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) closed out the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.
