Earlier in the day, the Cerritos College women's soccer team found out they had moved to #1 in the nation among Division III (non-scholarship) schools by the United Soccer Coaches. They responded with an 8-0 win over host Ventura College on Tuesday night to improve to 4-0-0 on the season. The Falcons have now outscored their opponents, 18-1 so far this season and will continue their all-road game pre-season by traveling to Taft College (3-1-1) for a 2:00 p.m. game on Friday.
A quartet of players accounted for all eight goals, with sophomore Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) picking up three goals and two assists. Both sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) and freshman Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) each scored twice, with sophomore Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine) picking up a goal and three assists.
It was a 2-0 game just seven minutes into the contest, as Ramirez got on the board first when a crossing pass from from Camacho was placed perfectly and the third-leading goal scorer in the state was able to head the ball home. Just a minute later, Ramirez won the ball at midfield and found Carr over the top. After controlling the ball, Carr went in alone where her first shot was turned away. Getting control of the rebound, Carr was able to chip the ball into the net for her first goal of the night.
The scoring continued in the first half, with Ramirez picking up her second goal, and Camacho getting the helper in the 28th minute. Carr got the play started when she sent over a crossing pass, where Camacho tried to take control, but had it bounce off a Pirate defender. In the right spot, Ramirez shot toward the far post and into the net. Not long before halftime, the Falcons made it 4-0 when Carr got off a strong shot that hit the goalpost and bounced out. Once again, with players deep in Ventura territory, Camacho was there to grab the rebound and score.
Not taking the foot off the gas, the Falcons opened the second half with a goal less than a minute in. Corrilo took the ball to start the half and passed to Ramirez, who found Camacho down the sideline. Taking the ball the final 40 yards, Camacho lined a shot into the net.
Ramirez finished off her hat trick in the 69th minute, while Corrilo scored her two goals five minutes apart in the waning moments of the game. As a team, Cerritos took 43 shots, with 23 of them on goal. Ventura did have a couple of scoring chances, but sophomore goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) turned away five shots and has yet to allow a goal this season.
