W. Tennis: Falcons turn in hard-fought win over Cypress

Hosting Cypress College (1-2) in a non-conference match on Tuesday, the Cerritos College women's tennis team came away with a 6-3 win. The Falcons (4-2) will host two more matches this week, the first being a 2:00 p.m. meeting with Rio Hondo College on Thursday, which will also serve as their South Coast Conference opener.

It was anyone's match after three marathon doubles competitions, with Cerritos pulling out two of the three team points. Sophomores Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS) and Elizabeth Aceves (Downey HS) came away with an 8-5 win, while sophomore Mona Navalta (Norwalk HS) and Mary Navalta (Norwalk HS) escaping with an 8-6 win.

After suffering a 9-7 loss in doubles play, freshman Petra Such (Gyula Illyés, Hungary) swept Andrea Velasco, 6-0, 6-0 in the #1 singles match. Her doubles partner, freshman Diviana Bravo (Unidad Educativa Rosa de Jesús Cordero, Ecuador) suffered an injury and was forced to default her #2 singles match. The match was decided when Pastor (6-4, 6-1), Aceves (6-3, 6-1) and Mona Navalta (6-3, 7-6) each came away with straight set wins.
