UPDATE - Petra Such and Diviana Bravo defeated teammates Danielle Pastor and Elizabeth Aceves, 8-3 to capture the conference doubles championship.
With the doubles championship match still to be held, the Cerritos College women's tennis team will have swept all of the titles and awards once that match is completed. Over the course of two days, the South Coast Conference champion Falcons had three of the four semifinalists in both singles and doubles play.
Freshman Petra Such (Gyula Illyés, Hungary), who was named the conference's Player of the Year, defeated freshman teammate Diviana Bravo (Unidad Educativa Rosa de Jesús Cordero, Ecuador) in the singles championship on Friday and will team with her for the doubles championship against another pair of teammates at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
Head coach Alvin Kim was also named the conference's Coach of the Year.
Seeded #1 for the tournament, Such (pictured, left) opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win in her first match and followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jess Diaz of Rio Hondo College to reach the semifinals. In that match, she disposed of sophomore teammate Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS), 6-1, 6-1 before sweeping past Bravo, 6-4, 6-3 in the finals.
Bravo (pictured, right with Such), seeded #4, won her first match, 6-0, 6-0 and then advanced to the semifinals when #3-seed Violet Simpson had to retire with Bravo leading, 5-2 in the first set. In the semifinals, she upended #2-seeded Nicole Robbins of Rio Hondo, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the championship match against Such.
The duo, who were seeded #1 for the conference tournament, will be facing Pastor and sophomore Elizabeth Aceves (Downey HS) in the championship match. They opened with a convincing 8-0 win in their first match and then held off Robbins and Diaz, the #4-seed, 8-6. Pastor and Aceves were seeded #3 and after an 8-2 win in their first match, had their hands full in a 9-7 win over teammates Mona Navalta (Norwalk HS) and Mary Navalta (Norwalk HS).
