At the conclusion of the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College women's tennis team had a pair of singles and one doubles team still alive. The Falcons had four singles players and all three of their doubles teams qualify for the state championships in Ojai, but suffered several losses.
Advancing in singles play were freshman Petra Such (Gyula Illyés, Hungary) and Diviana Bravo (Unidad Educativa Rosa de Jesús Cordero, Ecuador), who also teamed up to post the Falcons lone doubles win. Such, seeded #4, earned a solid 6-1, 6-1 win over Arielle Frank of Folsom Lake College and will square off against unseeded JoaAnn Taylor of Orange Coast College at 8:00 a.m. at Ventura College on Friday. Taylor posted an upset in her first match, as she defeated #12-seeded Evelien Kolen of Sierra College, 6-1, 7-5. In her first match of the tournament, #7-seeded Bravo recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alyssa Honore of Reedley College and will take on unseeded Tyler Bunderson of Santa Barbara City College at 8:00 a.m. on Friday at Buena High School. Bunderson posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 upset win over #10-seeded Mar Burgueno of Foothill College to earn the match against Bravo.
After winning her opening round match, 6-2, 6-3 over Alyanna Louise Soriano of Cypress College, sophomore Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS) was paired against #1-seeded Mayra Jovic of Santa Monica College.
