With the first day of the CCCAA State Championships in the books, the Cerritos College women's track and field team are one step closer to clinching their third straight title. The Falcons, who are looking to become just the third college in history to win three straight state championships, already have two first places to their credit and lead with 37 team points after four events have been completed. The second day of the championships, which are being held at American River College, will take place on Saturday.
The Falcons took the top two spots in the javelin, with freshman Mystasia Alexander (Lynwood HS) breaking her own school record in winning the state championship. On her third of five attempts, Alexander sent the javelin 45.61 meters (149' 08"), which was a good 9 1/2 feet further than sophomore Juanita Webster (Redlands HS), who sent her first throw 42.72 meters.
Not only did it put Webster second on the school's top five list in the javelin, it was also her only attempt of the day. She had a busy day completing four events in the heptathlon, while also winning the state championship in the long jump. She earned the Falcons 10 points with her distance of 6.00 meters, which easily beat the second place distance of 5.74 meters by Nia Vance of Laney College.
Also earning points for the team in the long jump was sophomore Breanna Curry (University HS), who took sixth place with 5.48 meters, which came on her last attempt. Sophomore Lilian Ebanks (Valencia HS) also competed and came in ninth place at 5.37 meters. The fourth and fifth place finishers posted their best marks on their final attempts, which dropped Curry down to sixth place.
In the hammer, sophomore Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) picked up a third place finish with her distance of 48.43 meters (158' 11"), which essentially put her in a tie with Anya Tonga of De Anza College. But Tonga earned the second place medal when her final throw also went 158' 11", but was also measured at 48.45 meters. Freshman Amber Hart (Narbonne HS), who took fifth place in the Southern California Championships, fouled on her first three attempts and did not place.
In the heptathlon, the defending state champion Webster compiled 3338 points after the first four events and leads second place Jasmine Hall of College of the Canyons by 200 points. Joining Webster in the heptathlon are freshmen Michaela Banyi (Valencia HS), who sits in third place with 2765 points, and Amani Briggs (Lakewood HS), whose 2617 points put her in fifth place after the first day.
Webster tied her personal best high jump of 1.75 meters to earn a whopping 916 points, while her 13.96 time in the 100-meter HH gave her a huge opening lead with 984 points. She added 885 points with her time of 25.02 in the 200 meters and collected 553 points with a shot put of 10.36 meters. Banyi's best event of the day was the 100-meter HH with a time of 15.03 earning her 838 points, while she picked up 750 points with her 200-meter time of 26.55. Amani also did well in the 100-meter HH with a time of 15.51 (775 points) and collected 709 points with her 200-meter time of 27.03.
The trio will conclude the heptathlon on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Webster, who has already won the state championship in the long jump and took second in the javelin, is trying to set the new all-time state record of 5500 heptathlon points. She amassed 5471 points when she won her second straight SoCal Heptathlon Championship in early March.
