M. Water Polo: Cerritos wins pair of games at SD Mesa Tournament

On Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team won both of their games at the San Diego Mesa Tournament. The Falcons (9-3), who have now won seven games in a row, played both of the games at Miramar College. The day opened with a 13-4 win over the San Diego State University Club team, followed by a 20-8 victory over Grossmont College. The team will play two games at SD Mesa tomorrow, opening with a 9:30 a.m. game against the host Olympians, and then play at 2:00 p.m. against Santa Monica College.

Cerritos vs. San Diego State Club: Defense led the way for the Falcons, who limited their opponent to just two goals in the first half, while putting eight in the net on offense. Freshman Angel Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) led the team with five goals and added three steals, with the trio of Marlon Moreno (Colegio Virgen del Rosario, Venezuela), Jesus Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) and Matthew Skinas (La Serna HS) all adding a pair of goals. Skinas also added five steals, with Peter Roldan (Downey HS) registering four steals. Sophomore goalie Alfredo De La Mora (Bell Gardens HS) finished with nine blocks and added two steals in the win.

Cerritos vs. Grossmont: In the win over the Griffins, 10 different players scored, as the Falcons turned a 6-1 first period lead into a 10-3 advantage at intermission. Freshman goalies Ariel Prado-Madera (Buena Park HS) and Brian Smith (Ocean View HS) combined for seven blocks. Jesus Rojas, Skinas, Israel Rodriguez (Whittier HS) and Jacob Graham (La Habra HS) all scored three goals for Cerritos, while Angel Rojas posted five helpers and four steals. Anthony Govani (Garden Grove HS), who scored twice, joined Rodriguez and Moreno with three assists each.
