In two of the first three games this season, Cerritos College freshman Angel Rojas (Colegio Fray Luis Amigo, Venezuela) set a new school record with nine goals. On Wednesday, Rojas eclipsed that total with 11 goals, as the Falcons defeated Chaffey College, 22-9 in a South Coast Conference game at the Falcon Aquatic Center. The win was the 14th in a row for Cerritos (16-3, 4-0), who will now compete in the Riverside Tournament over the weekend.
In the first period, the Falcons scored the first eight goals of the game, with Rojas accounting for three straight, while sophomore Marlon Moreno (Colegio Virgen del Rosario, Venezuela) also scored three times. Rojas put four more into the net in the second period, as the team took a 15-6 lead into halftime.
When he wasn't scoring goals in bunches, Rojas also played tough defense and recorded five steals. As a team, the Falcons finished with 21 steals, with freshman Anthony Govani (Garden Grove HS) posting four steals. A trio of players appeared in goal, led by sophomore Alfredo De La Mora (Bell Gardens HS), who had three blocks in the first period and then played the fourth quarter in the field and posted a goal. Freshman Brian Smith (Ocean View HS) made four saves, while Ariel Prado-Madera (Buena Park HS) recorded two stops.
Moreno concluded the game with five goals, with sophomore Cody Anderson (Valencia HS) and freshman Israel Rodriguez (Whittier HS) each scoring twice.
