Volleyball: Team drops season opener

Despite 16 kills from freshman outside hitter Susan Suski (Cerritos HS) and 12 kills from sophomore outside hitter Latia Peters (Hesperia HS), the Cerritos College volleyball team came up short in their season opener at Mt. San Jacinto College on Wednesday, 20-25, 25-21, 14-25, 30-32. The Falcons (0-1) will look for their first win on Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Santa Ana College for a non-conference match.

Suski, playing in her first collegiate match, accounted for seven of her game-high 16 kills in the first game, while freshman setter Aniga Aiono (Lakewood HS) was effectively distributing the ball on her way to 27 assists. On the night, eight different players recorded at least one kill, with Peters adding 12 in the losing cause. Sophomore middle blocker Andrea Garrett (Cerritos HS) added six kills and led the team with three blocks and three service aces.

Freshman middle blocker Laura Bogarin (Firebaugh HS) chipped in with five kills in nine attempts, while Aiono contributed three kills. Suski also finished with three digs and three assists, while freshmen Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) and Stephanie Ortiz (Huntington Park College Ready Academy HS) also had three digs.
