Volleyball: Cerritos wins one of three pool play matches

Competing at the San Diego City Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College volleyball team won one of their three two-game pool play matches and then split their two consolation round matches. The tournament will now be followed by the Falcons opening South Coast Conference play with a 6:00 p.m. match at Mt. San Antonio on Friday. In the tournament, Cerritos faced Taft College (23-25, 22-25), South Mountain (AZ) College (20-25, 14-25) and Rio Hondo College (26-24, 25-20) before competing against Cerro Coso College (25-13) and Chaffey College (18-25) in the consolation rounds.

In the loss to Taft, the trio of Latia Peters (Hesperia HS), Susan Suski (Cerritos HS) and Aniga Aiono (Lakewood HS) all finished with seven kills, while Aiono also finished with seven assists and eight digs, with Suski leading the team with 14 digs. Freshman Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) posted 13 digs, with sophomore Gloria Chang (Bellflower HS) sharing the setting duties and added six assists and four digs. Suski led the way with six kills and six digs in the match against South Mountain, with Peters (four kills) and Aiono (two kills, four assists, four digs) also providing offense. Peter also had a pair of blocks with freshman Chelsea James (La Mirada HS) also adding two kills. Freshman Yazmin Rios (Paramount HS) led the back row with eight digs.

It was a strong effort by Suski in the win over Rio Hondo that led the way, as she recorded 11 kills, to go along with 15 digs and four services aces, while Peters finished with nine kills. Aiono had four kills in six attempts to compliment her 13 assists, with Chang (eight digs), Castro (11 digs) and Rio (nine digs) also playing a strong back row. Peters had five kills in six attempts in the one-game playoff against Cerro Coso, with Aiono (two kills, six assists) getting her the ball. Suski posted four kills, with Peters pounding down five kills in the loss to Chaffey. Suski (two kills, four digs) and James (two kills) also accounted for the offense, while Aiono dished out five assists.
