The Cerritos College volleyball team gave visiting Mt. San Antonio College all it could handle in the first game of their South Coast Conference match at Gahr HS on Wednesday. They held the lead at 10-9 and were as close as 16-13, but a run of Mountie points led to a 25-17 lead, followed by 25-14 and 25-20 scores to record the sweep. The loss drops the Falcons to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in SCC play, with Mt. SAC improving to 13-4 and 6-2. Cerritos will travel to Long Beach City College for a 6:00 p.m. match on Friday.

Just like with all of the other highly ranked teams in the South Coast Conference, the Falcons had trouble dealing with the overall height of their opponents. It was more of the same against Mt. SAC, who received a combined 25 kills from Saleen Sanchez and Sandra Gutierrez, while Cerritos finished with just 21 total kills as a team.

The Falcons struggled to handle to serve of Mt. San Antonio, as they allowed 11 service aces with Leau Quiocho leading the way with four aces to go along with her 31 assists as a setter, as well as five kills. Freshman Chelsea James (La Mirada HS) led Cerritos with six kills in the loss, while sophomore Latia Peters (Hesperia HS) also had six kills, but also finished with six attack errors.

Sophomore Andrea Garrett (Cerritos HS) recorded five kills in six attacks and produced both of the team's solo blocks, with freshman Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) leading the back row with nine digs. The team played the match without their kills leader, freshman Susan Suski (Cerritos HS).
