Playing a pair of games at Nancy Kelly Field on Saturday, the Cerritos College softball team was able to come back and win one of the contests. The Falcons opened with a 5-4 win over Cuesta College before an 8-0, 5-inning loss to Fullerton College. The team will travel to Cypress College on Monday for a 2:00 p.m. make-up game from last week that was washed away due to rain.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Cerritos (3-2) had sophomore first baseman Nadia Landeros (Warren HS/Rio Hondo College) and sophomore third baseman Natalie Basurto (Walnut HS) draw walks to put runners on base with one out. Landeros advanced to third base on a wild pitch, which put her in position to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player Celeste Carbajal (Mayfair HS). After second baseman Ayiana Cardenas (Walnut HS) drew a two-out walk, sophomore outfielder Jocelyn Doan (Walnut HS) laid down a two-out bunt only to see Cougars first baseman Alexis Sargenti drop the ball, which kept the inning alive.

Sophomore outfielder Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) followed by lacing an RBI single, which set the table for freshman outfielder Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS), who drove the first pitch into right-center which brought home two runners and gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead.

Sophomore pitcher Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS) recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh inning to earn the win in the circle. She allowed four runs on seven hits, but struck out eight batters.

Coming back a half hour later, Carranza seemed to run out of gas, as the Hornets scored an unearned run in the second inning and then opened the game wide open with six runs in the third inning. She was charged with five of those runs in two-plus innings of work, with freshman Sarah Gutierrez (Sonora HS) getting charged with two runs in one inning of work. Macias also pitched two innings.

The only offense for the Falcons in the game was a two-out infield hit by sophomore shortstop Marley Manalo (Walnut HS) in the fourth inning. In the game, Cerritos struck out 11 times in the five innings.
