Softball: Big innings lead Cerritos to 13-3 win

A four-run third inning, as well as a seven-run sixth inning helped propel the Cerritos College softball team to a 13-3, 6-inning win at Grossmont College on Thursday. The win was the second in a row for the Falcons (5-3), who will travel to Riverside City College for a 3:00 p.m. game next Tuesday, weather permitting.

After taking a 1-0 lead, Cerritos scored four times in the third inning to extend their lead to 5-0. In the inning, the first four batters drew walks, with the fourth one plating a run. Sophomore third baseman Natalie Basurto (Walnut HS) drove in a run on a ground out, while a sacrifice fly by freshman Natalie Fraijo (Charter Oak HS) drove in the third run of the inning. The Falcons closed out the inning on a double by sophomore first baseman Celeste Carbajal (Mayfair HS).

Although the Griffins (0-7) were able to answer back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, Cerritos pushed a single run across in the fourth inning and closed the game out with a seven-run sixth inning.

The big hit in the inning was a three-run double by Basurto, while freshman second baseman Ayiana Cardenas (Walnut HS) drove in two more runs with a double. Basurto finished the game with a career-high four RBI, while Carbajal went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman outfielder Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS) was 2-for-2 wirth three walks, scored a pair of runs and drove in a run.

Sophomore pitcher Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS) earned the win after spreading out six hits and struck out four batters.
