Looking to snap a two-game South Coast Conference losing skid, the Cerritos College softball team went to East Los Angeles College on Thursday and posted a 18-1, five-inning win. The 18 runs scored were the most by a Falcons team since a 21-0 win over Los Angeles Harbor College on April 11, 2017. The victory for the Falcons improved their season record to 18-9, while they are now 8-6 in conference play. The team is slated to host Santa Ana College at noon on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field.

Cerritos opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when freshman second baseman Ayiana Cardenas (Walnut HS) drew a two-out walk. Freshman outfielder Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS) got the Falcons on the board with an RBI double, while sophomore outfielder Jocelyn Doan (Walnut HS) followed with a run-scoring triple. The inning continued with sophomore outfielder Jazmine Macias (La Mirada HS) driving home Doan with a double making it a 3-0 lead.

In the next inning, four consecutive walks plated a run for Cerritos, followed by a throwing error on an attempted force play at the plate that allowed the fifth run of the game to score. Fontela drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single, with Macias beating out an infield hit for another RBI. The inning continued on another Huskies error, which allowed sophomore third baseman Natalie Basurto (Walnut HS) to reach base and allow Fontela to score. Before the play ended, East LA recorded another throwing error that brought home Doan and gave the Falcons a 9-0 advantage.

Sophomore pitcher Reanna Carranza (El Rancho HS) was the recipient of the offensive output, as she limited East Los Angeles to just one hit and a walk through the first three innings. She did allow a run on four hits in the fourth inning, and left the bases loaded when she got Zahyra Venecia to fly out to end the inning. Carranza (18-9) completed the five-inning game with three strikeouts in earning the win.

The offense continued in the top of the fourth inning with sophomore first baseman Nadia Landeros (Warren HS/Rio Hondo College) leading off with a single, while she advanced to third when sophomore catcher Jimena Velazquez (Fullerton Union HS) reached on an error. Sophomore designated player Celeste Carbajal (Mayfair HS) made the error hurt, as she doubled in both runners. Doan followed by driving in her second run of the day with an infield single to give the Falcons a 12-0 advantage.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cerritos got back at it offensively when Landeros doubled home Basurto, who led off with a single to start the fifth inning. Velazquez reached base via an error for the second time on the day, which brought home another run. The offense continued when freshman pinch-hitter Jessica Perez (Bellflower HS) brought in a run on an infield groundout. The Huskies continued to hurt themselves, as their sixth error of the game allowed the 16th run of the game for the Falcons. With runners on second and third base, freshman pinch-hitter Miranda Romo (Alhambra HS) doubled in a pair of runs to close out the scoring.

Macias (two RBI), Landeros (RBI, three runs scored), Fontela (two RBI, two runs scored) and Doan (two RBI, two runs scored) all had a pair of hits for the Falcons, while Carbajal drove in three runs on the day.
