W. Soccer: Team posts 4-0 shutout over Irvine Valley

The Cerritos College women's soccer team out-shot host Irvine Valley College, 20-5 in their non-conference game on Friday and it resulted in a 4-0 victory. With the shutout, the Falcons improved to 2-0-1, while the Lasers fell to 2-1-0. The team will travel to Los Angeles Pierce College next Friday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.

In the waning minutes of the first half, Cerritos struck twice, with a little help from the Lasers. In the 40th minute, the Falcons were credited with a goal when sophomore defender Gabi Lamb (Yorba Linda HS) sent the ball toward the Irvine Valley box. None of the players were able to handle the ball cleanly and it was knocked into the net for an own goal, with Lamb getting credit for the tally. In extra time, freshman Whitney Strickland (El Modena HS) battled for the ball near the goal, with freshman Leslie Walker (Long Beach Poly HS) able to gain control of the ball. She drilled a shot on the back post, and scored her second goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Ruby Nichols (Bishop Amat HS) started her third game in a row and was not required to make a save. She gets credit for the win, with freshman Cyndie Trejo (Artesia HS) playing the second half and posted three saves.

Cerritos took a 3-0 lead five minutes into the second half when freshman Natalie deLeon (St. Joseph HS) found freshman Jamie Peters (Bishop Amat HS), who finished the play by scoring her third goal of the year. deLeon got on the scoreboard in the 84th minute, as she lifted a shot over the hard-charging Lasers goalkeeper Hermenia Verduzco, with freshman Adriana Velasquez (Long Beach Jordan HS) earning the assist.
