Cerritos women's soccer celebrates after scoring against Richland (TX)

Over the last nine seasons, the Cerritos College women's soccer team has traveled out of state seven times to take on teams in other parts of the country. Since 2007, the team has posted a 10-1-1 record in those games, which includes their 2-1 victory on Thursday against Richland (TX) College. They've won their last nine games against out-of-state school by a combined score of 47-3. The Falcons have taken trips to Illinois, Florida three times, New York and New Jersey. This year, the team is playing two games in Texas, with their second against Cisco (TX) College at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Cisco is currently ranked #18 in the country among NSCAA Division I (scholarship) schools. As for the Falcons (3-0-2), they are ranked #2 in the country among Division III (non-scholarship) schools.

In the win over Richland, who has won three NJCAA National Championships, with the most recent being in 2013, the Falcons took a 1-0 first half lead on a goal by freshman Natalie deLeon (St. Joseph HS). On the play, freshman Amber Whitmore (Los Alamitos HS) made a perfect throw-in, where deLeon was able to flick the ball hard enough and into the net.

Throughout the game, Cerritos was buzzing around the net, but just weren't able to finish plays. They recorded 13 of their 17 shots on goal in the first half, and easily could have scored three or four more times. The young team is still looking for their finishing touches, which will give them more of a cushion during games.

Maintaining that slim lead, the Falcons added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when freshman Adriana Velasquez (Long Beach Jordan HS) dribbled the ball into the attacking zone and took a shot. The ball deflected off a Richland player and landed in front of deLeon, who finished off her team-leading fourth goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Ruby Nicholas (Bishop Amat HS) saw her shutout go by the wayside late in the game, but but finished with two saves and earned the win.
