W. Tennis: Conference win gets team closer to undefeated season

With one South Coast Conference match remaining on their schedule, the Cerritos College women's tennis team is poised to finish with an undefeated record. On Tuesday, the Falcons (20-1, 11-0) defeated host Rio Hondo College, 8-1 and only have a match at College of the Desert on Thursday keeping them from a perfect conference record. Cerritos is currently ranked #1 in Southern California.

The match started with the Falcons sweeping in doubles and then earned five straight set wins and lost just a combined four games. The top of the doubles ladder saw sophomores Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) and Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) earning an 8-1 win and then followed that with singles wins where they each lost just one game.

The dominance in the match continued on all facets, as the #3 doubles team of sophomore Jovana Milosevic (High School of Business and Law, Serbia/Hillsborough, FL CC) and freshman Danielle Pastor (Bishop Montgomery HS) playing to an 8-2 win. They also lost one game each in singles, playing in the #5 and #6 positions, respectively.

Freshmen Tiffany Sanchez (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Valentina Polonyi (Altisa, Hungary) had a tougher doubles match, winning 8-5. Polonyi earned a 6-0, 6-0 singles win, while Sanchez had to default out of her singles match with an injury. She was leading 3-1 in the first set at the time of her decision to default.
