Led by sophomore thrower Destiny Talalemotu (Long Beach Millikan HS), the Cerritos College women's track and field team sits in first place after the first day of the CCCAA State Championships with 13 team points. Taking place at San Diego Mesa College, Talalemotu won her third state championship in her Falcon career, adding to the shot put and discus titles she earned as a freshman in 2014.

Juanita Webster makes an attempt in the high jump In addition to Talalemotu, freshman heptathlete Juanita Webster (Redlands HS) currently sits in second place after the first day. She has compiled 2771 points and trails first place Julia Grimm of Santa Rosa Junior College by 98 points with three events remaining. Grimm set a new state standard in the high jump (1.76 meters), which earned her 928 points and enabled her to pull ahead of Webster (pictured, left), who held the state's best mark (1.69 meters) entering the state championships.

Talalemotu was leading the hammer after her first throw (51.94 meters), which would have earned her the state championship. But she saved her best throw for last, which went 51.31 meters, which was still shy of her school record best distance of 56.51 meters.

The Falcons had four entries in the javelin, but collected just three team points, a seventh place by sophomore Sarah Baker (Paramount HS) and an eighth place finish by freshman Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS), who entered with the shortest throw of all 12 competitors. Baker threw 36.18 meters on her second throw, while Rodriguez posted her eighth place distance of 36.04 meters on her third of six attempts, which was a personal best. Expecting to receive more points, both Talalemotu and freshman Ashley Flores (California HS) struggled with the wind and had a hard time finding their rhythm.

Webster opened the heptathlon with 810 points with her time of 15.24 in the 100-meter HH and had the second best shot put (10.52 meters), which added 564 points to her total. She capped off the day with the best time (26.51) in the 200 meters, good for 753 points. Freshman teammate Giselle Burgos (El Rancho HS) sits in 10th place with 2031 points, with her best event of the day being the 100-meter HH, with her time of 16.93 earning her 604 points and was the sixth best of the entries.

Sophomore Stephanie Perea (Downey HS) competed in the 10,000 meters and finished in 11th place with a personal best time of 41:27.67.
