W. Track & Field: Thrower sets new school record

In a busy weekend for the Cerritos College women's track and field team, they saw one of their school records fall at the UC Irvine 4-Way Meet on Saturday. The Falcons, who competed at the Occidental Distance Medley on Friday, went to UC Irvine on Saturday and saw sophomore Destiny Talalemotu (Long Beach Millikan HS) eclipse her own record in the hammer throw. The team will now travel to the UNLV Invitational next weekend.

Occidental Distance Medley: Competing in just four events, the Falcons had entries in the 800 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters and 3000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Elsa Vazquez-Vallin (Warren HS) took 11th place in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:53.87, while Cerritos had a trio of entries in the 5000 meters. Out of the 119 runners, sophomore Stephanie Perea (Downey HS) came in 83rd place with a time of 19:28.65, while freshman Alexis Garfias (Schurr HS) posted a 103rd place time of 20:12.14. The third runner, sophomore Brianna Gill (La Serna HS) finished in 20:49.41, which put her in 110th place. The 1500 meters saw freshman Neiva Cuevas (Western HS) post a 65th place time of 5:21.97, with freshman Kathia Munoz (Paramount HS) crossed the finish line in 5:23.04, good for 68th place. Sophomore Jaida Bailey (Vista del Lago HS) placed 59th in the 800 meters in a time of 2:58.20.

UC Irvine 4-Way Meet: In the hammer, Talalemotu broke her old record on the second throw of the day. Her record-breaking distance of 54.34 meters put her in fourth place on the day behind a pair of Cal State Long Beach throwers and one from UC Irvine. She also came in third place in the shot put with a distance of 13.57 meters on her final throw, while her discus toss of 46.88 meters earned her a fourth place finish. Talalemotu also took fourth place in the javelin with a throw of 37.12 meters.

In the running events, sophomore Najia Hudspeth (Kennedy HS) turned in a pair of first place finishes. She won the 100 meters in 12.06, while her time of 24.16 was the best in the 200 meters. Sophomore Nylia Hudspeth (Kennedy HS) turned in the fourth best time in the 200 meters at 25.32, and won the 400 meters with a time of 56.79. Sophomore Maria Orosco (Katella HS) came in sixth place in the 1500 meters when she posted a time of 4:47.48, while freshman Juanita Webster (Redlands HS) took fifth place in the 100-meter HH in 14.51. Freshman Giselle Burgos (El Rancho HS) also came in second place in the 400-meter IH with a clocking of 1:09.00.

In other field events, the pair of Webster and freshman Bria Palmer (J.W. North HS) tied for first place in the high jump at 1.65 meters, with freshman Lilian Ebanks (Valencia HS) winning the ling jump with a distance of 5.84 meters, which moved her into third place on the school's top five list.
