Locked in a scoreless battle on Wednesday, the Cerritos College softball team scored the game's lone runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 2-0 win over Chaffey College. The Falcons (5-1) will now play their next three games on the road, starting on Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference crossover game at Rio Hondo College.

In the win against the Panthers (3-7), Cerritos was limited to just two hits heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) led off the stanza with a ground ball that she beat out after Chaffey shortstop Isabelle Dena mishandled the roller. After she was advanced to second base, freshman catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS) singled to put runners on first and third. That  brought sophomore shortstop Erica Guzman (Enoch HS/william Jessup University) to the plate, and she laced a two-run double, which turned out to be the game's only runs.

Sophomore starting pitcher Jissel Caballero (Warren HS) tossed the first four innings and allowed four hits, while working out of a third-inning situation. With runners on first and second, Caballero got consecutive infield pop flies to end the inning. Freshman Carly Gutierrez (Santa Fe HS) came on in the fifth inning and retired the first six batters she faced. After Joelie Whitson led off the seventh inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and third base on an infield out, Bryana Martinez drew a one-out walk. That brought on sophomore Kristen Voller (Norco HS) came on in relief.

Brandy Lara dropped down a bunt, and Lopez was able to scoop up the ball and throw her out at first base. But on the play, Whitson tried to come home and freshman first baseman Desiree Flores (Downey HS) threw a strike to Lopez and she was able to cut Whitson down for the final out of the game. Gutierrez earned her first collegiate win, while Voller picked up her first save of the season.
