Cerritos College sophomore softball player Ashley Melendez (Magnolia HS) has been named the recipient of the Bob Arthur Athletic Scholarship. The $500 scholarship was established to award a student-athlete with heart and dedication, as well as someone who serves as a team motivator both on and off the playing field. The criteria to receive the scholarship also includes being a full-time student with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Melendez, a Social Behavior major, will be transferring to Phoenix (AZ) College to complete her Associate of Science degree. She plans to transfer to Arizona State University and continue her studies to be a nurse.
In two seasons with the Falcon softball team, Melendez was a career .183 hitter with eight RBI and 13 walks. She appeared in 41 games her sophomore season as the team's starting left fielder and had a two-hit game against Glendale College. She led the team with six sacrifices and recorded three outfield assists on defense.
