It was thought to be a harmless run in the first inning in their non-conference game at Cypress College on Saturday. But for the Cerritos College softball team, that run would be enough to defeat them in a 1-0 loss, which dropped the team's record to 15-5. The Falcons will resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Robinson Park to take on Pasadena City College in a 2:00 p.m. game.

In that first inning, freshman pitcher Kristen Voller (Norco HS) allowed a leadoff single to Justice Walker, who stole second base and advanced to third on a fly ball out. After Voller hit Taylor Pierce, a fielder's choice ground out brought home what would turn out to be the only run of the game. Voller pitched a complete game and allowed just three hits while striking out six batters.

In the top of the second inning, sophomore shortstop Raquel Norzagaray (Pioneer HS) and sophomore catcher Jesseca Martinez (Lakewood HS) drew two out walks. The inning came to an end when sophomore designated player Camille Manzo (La Habra HS/Sterling (KS) College) struck out.

The Falcons had their best scoring chance in the third inning when freshman outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) led off with a triple. Sophomore third baseman Jenny Navarro (Warren HS) drew a walk to put runners on first and third with no outs. Cerritos was unable to hit the ball out of the infield, which stranded Olivas at third base.

Singles by Manzo and Olivas gave the Falcons another great start to an inning, but once again, they weren't able to advance the runners and then fifth ended the way the previous innings did. That would be the last hit for Cerritos, as Cypress retired the final nine batters to secure the win.
