The Cerritos College softball team spent the first six innings looking to push their first run across the plate against host Cypress College on Wednesday. By the time they were able to score, the Chargers were holding a 6-0 lead and the Falcons (1-3) dropped a 6-1 non-conference decision. The team will look for a win on Friday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Santiago Canyon College (6-0) at Nancy Kelly Field.

In the top of the first inning, the Falcons were able to advance a runner to third base after sophomore third baseman Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS) doubled and moved to third base on a wild pitch. However, sophomore shortstop Stephanie Olivas (Warren HS) struck out and sophomore first baseman Haley Whitney (Warren HS) flew out to center to end the inning. Cerritos didn't get their next hit until the top of the fourth inning when Mejia singled to lead off the stanza. Olivas followed with a double. But on the next play, Whitney lined out to Justice Walker in right field, who followed with a throw to the plate to cut down Mejia.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cypress got to sophomore pitcher Jamie Ramirez (El Rancho HS) for four runs. A lead-off double and error by sophomore centerfielder Arianna Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) put a runner on third base. A walk was followed by an RBI ground out. With two outs, the Chargers received an RBI singles from Chelsee Herron and Makia Hastings, along with an RBI double by Khailey Campos.

Cerritos strung together three straight singles in the top of the sixth inning, but couldn't score and then finally got on the board when freshman catcher Krystal Purkey (Gahr HS) scored on a single from Ramirez. On the day, the Falcons stranded six runners on base, with five of them in scoring position.
