Leading 12-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cerritos College softball team surrendered five runs to host Glendale College and suffered a 13-12 loss. The setback in the team's season opening game showed their ability to score runs, but it was two big innings for the host Vaqueros that did in the Falcons. The team comes back on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. to host Santa Ana College in their home opener at Nancy Kelly Field.

Cerritos took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings, but saw Glendale (1-0) score five runs in the bottom of the second inning against starting pitcher Kat Flores (El Rancho HS) and reliever Jamie Ramirez (El Rancho HS), who wound up taking the loss. The Falcons then led, 8-1 and 12-7 before watching the Vaqueros score the final six runs on the game to pull out the win.

Freshman first baseman Haley Petruccelli (Torrance HS) hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the team on top, 12-7, while she opened her college career with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. As for sophomore third baseman Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS), the returning South Coast Conference Player of the Year, clubbed a triple and a double in her first two at-bats, and then drew a pair of walks to reach base four time, while she drove in three runs. Freshman leadoff hitter Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) scored three times and stole three bases in the loss, with sophomore second baseman Haley Whitney (Warren HS) clubbing three hits.
