Softball: Team puts up big numbers in win

The Cerritos College softball team continued their road trip by posting a 12-0, 5-inning South Coast Conference win over host Los Angeles Harbor College on Thursday. The Falcons (20-7, 13-1) have won five of the first seven games during their 11-game road trip. They will travel to the Ventura Tournament over the weekend to play four more games.

In beating the Seahawks, Cerritos was carried by the bat of sophomore first baseman Haley Whitney (Warren HS), who hit a pair of home runs and drove in six runs in the win. After freshman outfielder Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) singled to start the game, she went on to steal three straight bases, including home to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Danah Vasquez (Santa Fe HS) and Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS) reached base by drawing walks, which led to a three-run blast by Whitney.

Whitney added a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, which also included sophomore pitcher Jamie Ramirez (El Rancho HS) stealing home, with Perruccio and freshman catcher Haley Petruccelli (Torrance HS) each driving in a run. Freshman pinch-hitter Stefani Gonzales (El Rancho HS), added an RBI double in the third inning, while Whitney picked up her sixth RBI in the fourth with a single.

Perruccio finished the day 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored, while Vasquez drew a pair of walks and scored twice in the win. As for Mejia, she walked twice and was hit by a pitch, with sophomore shortstop Stephanie Olivas (Warren HS) collecting a pair of hits. Ramirez pitched the first inning, with sophomore Kat Flores (El Rancho HS) allowing three hits over the next four innings to earn the win.
