The Cerritos College softball team posted a 4-0 shutout against Riverside City College on Sunday to complete a two-game sweep of their Southern California Regional Playoff series. Seeded #10 for the post-season, the Falcons (32-10) had only three hits on the day, but took advantage of eight walks to post the win. It was the third win in a row this season against the #5-seeded Tigers. The team will now advance to the Super Regional next weekend, which will consist of a four-team double-elimination tournament.

The Falcons will be in the Palomar bracket against the #1-seed - and defending state champion - Comets. Joining them will be #5-seeded Santiago Canyon College and #5-seeded Santa Ana College. Cerritos has faced all three teams this year and own an 11-8 win over Palomar. They have been defeated three times by Santa Ana (8-2, 13-9, 10-7) and dropped a 4-1 decision to Santiago Canyon. The Super Regional will take place next Friday through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the CCCAA State Championships at Bakersfield College May 16-18.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a bases loaded walk to freshman Haley Petruccelli (Torrance HS), Cerritos broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. Freshman second baseman Monique Ramirez (Torrance HS), Petruccelli and freshman outfielder Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) all drew walks to start the stanza. With one out, sophomore third baseman Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS) drove a 2-0 offering from Tigers (28-13) pitcher MacKenzie Maxwell into center field which brought in all three baserunners.

Sophomore starting pitcher Jamie Ramirez (El Rancho HS) allowed three two-out singles to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning. But she got Kaylie Garcia to fly out and the inning. The Tigers stranded a runner at third base in the second inning, as Jamie Ramirez got Jamie Munoz to line out and then struck out leadoff hitter Michelle Paul looking.

A leadoff single and walk prompted the removal of Jamie Ramirez for sophomore Kat Flores (El Rancho HS) in the fifth inning. Flores (14-2), who earned the win in both games, retired three straight batters to get out of the inning. In the sixth, a two-out error, walk and base hit loaded the bases once again for Riverside. And just like she did the previous inning, Flores got Paul to ground out and end the stanza. The Tigers left 11 runners on base.
