In the second week of the season, the Cerritos College softball team faced Santiago Canyon College at the College of the Desert Tournament and dropped their first game of the season. On Friday, the Falcons returned the favor, as they handed the Hawks a 4-3 setback, their first of the year. Cerritos (4-2) will be back on the road on Saturday when they travel to Grossmont College for a noon contest.

Cerritos scored first in the game against Santiago Canyon (4-1), but quickly fell behind, 2-1 after surrendering a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. But in the top of the third inning, a pair of runs gave them a 3-2 lead, while an insurance run in the fifth inning turned out to be the game-winner.

In the top of the first inning, sophomore Crystal Cano (Norwalk HS/Lynn (FL) University) doubled and then came home when freshman Jenny Collazo (Paramount HS) clubbed a run-scoring double. Sophomore Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) led off the third inning with a single and advanced to second on a Cano base hit. With one out, sophomore first baseman Haley Petruccelli (Torrance HS) doubled to left-center, plating Perruccio. After a walk to Jasmine Javier (Cerritos HS) loaded the bases with two outs, sophomore catcher Krystal Purkey (Gahr HS) brought home the second run of the inning when he walked.

Sophomore Ana Pedroza (La Mirada HS/Caldwell (NJ) College) pitched six innings to earn the win, with freshman Jennifer Navarro (Warren HS) coming on in the seventh inning the pick up the save. Pedroza allowed 13 hits on the day, but was able to work out of situations in the first, third and sixth innings.

The eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning started with Collazo and Petruccelli each drawing walks. Navarro sacrificed them oven and Collazo scored on an infield out by Javier.
