In their South Coast Conference opener, the Cerritos College softball team slapped out 16 hits, including seven extra-base hits in their 13-5 win over visiting Pasadena City College on Tuesday. With the win, the Falcons improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They will travel to Long Beach City College for a 3:00 p.m. game on Thursday.

A big seven-run third inning put Cerritos out in front comfortably, with the big hit being a two-out grand slam by sophomore third baseman Crystal Cano (Norwalk HS/Lynn (FL) University). The Falcons had a pair of runners on in the inning and didn't start their seven-run rally until two outs were recorded. A base hit by freshman outfielder Jasmine Javier (Cerritos HS) drove in the first two runners, while consecutive singles from freshman Cheyann Samuelson (Western HS) and sophomore Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) loaded the bases for Cano.

The Falcons also capitalized on four Lancers (8-2, 0-1) errors to help them take an early lead. They played a role in two of the first three runs. The game came to a conclusion in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Roxanna Jensen (Havre, MT HS) doubled home sophomore catcher Krystal Purkey (Gahr HS) with the 13th run, which earned Cerritos the mercy rule win. Jensen, who came on as a replacement for Samuelson (2-for-2) in the fourth inning, also hit a solo home run.

Perruccio, winning pitcher Jennifer Navarro (Warren HS), Javier, Samuelson and Jensen all had a pair of hits for Cerritos.
