After their first time at bat, things looked pretty good for the Cerritos College softball team. The Falcons scored in the top of the first inning in their South Coast Conference game against ECC Compton Center on Tuesday for an early 1-0 lead. The Tartars tied the game at 1-1 after the first inning, and neither team would score again until the seventh inning. However, it was Compton who scored and Cerritos lost a 2-1 game that dropped their season record to 14-8 and 8-3 in conference play. The team will now travel to El Camino College on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. game against a Warriors team that is tied for first place in conference play.

In that first inning, sophomore third baseman Crystal Cano (Norwalk HS/Lynn (FL) University) singled with two outs and came home on a double by sophomore Jennifer Navarro (Warren HS). But Cerritos would get just three more its the rest of the game and failed to score. Freshman outfielder Cheyann Samuelson (Western HS) had two of the team's hits, while sophomore first baseman Haley Petruccelli (Torrance HS) was stranded on second base after her double in the fourth inning.

Sophomore starting pitcher Ana Pedroza (La Mirada HS/Caldwell (NJ) College) allowed a run on three hits in the first inning and five hits in her three innings of work. Navarro (9-2) came on to pitch in the fourth inning and retired nine of the first 11 batters she faced. But in the bottom of the seventh inning, a leadoff double by Brooke Laird resulted in the game-winning run when Pricilla Gonzalez drove her in to end the game.
