Softball: Team posts 14 hits in 13-5 win

With aspirations of finishing in second place in the South Coast Conference, the Cerritos College softball team handed host Los Angeles Harbor College a 13-5 setback on Thursday. The Falcons (23-14, 14-6) are currently a half game behind Mt. San Antonio College for second place. However, the Mounties travel to first place El Camino College on Friday and then conclude with a 3:00 p.m. game against Cerritos next Tuesday. Prior to their game against Mt. SAC, the Falcons host Santiago Canyon College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field.

In beating the Seahawks, the Falcons scored four runs in the first inning and put runs on the board in five of the seven innings. A leadoff single by freshman shortstop Jenny Collazo (Paramount HS) was followed by an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Crystal Cano (Norwalk HS/Lynn (FL) University), who finished with four hits and two RBI. A double by sophomore catcher Krystal Purkey (Gahr HS) and throwing error led to two more runs, while sophomore outfielder Joanna Perruccio (Long Beach Wilson HS) drove in the fourth run.

Freshman pitcher Jennifer Navarro (Warren HS) earned the win in the circle and worked through one bad inning where she allowed four of the runs. She finished with four strikeouts and also added a pair of hits and three RBI at the plate. Navarro drove in the final two runs of the game in the seventh inning with a base hit. Freshman outfielder Jasmine Javier (Cerritos HS) slapped out three hits, drove in a pair and stole two bases.

With her two RBI on Thursday, Cano now has 55 on the year, which ties her for third on the school's single season list with Samantha Vaaulu (2010) and Jennifer Salas (2009). Vaaulu and pitching coach Jessica Navarro share the record with 71 RBI in a season. Perruccio moved into a tie for third place for most walks in a season (32) with Vaaulu, while Jessica Roper (2011) holds the single-season record at 37 walks.
