W. Soccer: Claudia Lopez named to Mexican U-20 National Team

Claudia Lopez, who was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Player of the Year in 2013 for the Cerritos College women's soccer team, was named as a member of the Mexico U-20 National Team and will play in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Lopez, who led the Falcons to consecutive NSCAA National Championships and California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, signed a letter of intent to play at UC Irvine for the upcoming season.

The FIFA World Cup is taking place in Canada and the Mexican U-20 National Team opens on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Nigeria atMoncton Stadium. A member of Group C, the team will also face England at 10:00 a.m. on August 9 in Moncton and conclude group play at the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto against Korea Republic at 4:00 p.m. on August 13.

Games for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will stream online on ESPN3.

Claudia Lopez was named to the U-20 Mexican National Team While with Cerritos in 2013, Lopez finished the season with a team-high 27 goals, including two in the state championship game, and 16 assists. Her 70 points were the third most in school history behind Monique Cisneros, who had 82 in 2008 and Corina Villegas, who had 81 points in 2007. The 27 goals were the fourth most in a season Falcon history, while her 16 assists were  tied for the seventh most.

"We're very proud of Claudia and her selection to the national team," said Falcons head coach Ruben Gonzalez. "She's a very talented player and I know she'll be able to contribute to the success of the Mexican U-20 National Team."

According to UC Irvine head coach Scott Juniper, "Claudia's inclusion on the team is very exciting. She's new to our program this season, and news of this magnitude is huge for her and heightens the excitement for the fans and her contribution to the program."
