W. Soccer: Goals come in bunches as Falcons win, 16-0

The Cerritos College women's soccer team played their second game of their Illinois trip on Sunday and recorded a lopsided 16-0 win over College of Lake County (IL). The Falcons, ranked #1 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) among Division III (non-scholarship) schools, put eight shots into the net in each half to finish off the trip by outscoring their opponents by a combined 18-0 score. The team will get the next week off before opening South Coast Conference play on September 30 with a 4:00 p.m. game at East Los Angeles College.

The win by Cerritos saw nine different players score goals, with sophomore Nayeli Requejo (Bishop Amat HS) having a hand in eight goals, scoring four of her own and adding four helpers. With her 12-point game, she now had seven goals and 13 assists on the season and is tied for second in the state in scoring with 27 points, while her 13 assists lead all players. Currently fourth in the state in scoring is sophomore Ashley Anaya-Webb (Yorba Linda HS/Cal State Long Beach) with 25 points after producing two first half goals and is now tied for the state lead with 11 goals.

The Falcons led in the game 5-0 after the first 16 minutes and in one nine-minute stretch of the second half, found the back of the net five more times. Sophomore goalkeeper Adrianna Salazar (Downey HS) played the first half and posted one save, with freshman Savannah Pilovsky (Fullerton HS) making two second half saves.

Also scoring multiple goals on the day were sophomore Carolina Ornelas (Artesia HS), along with freshmen Tiffany Castillo (Artesia HS) and Esmeralda Verdugo (Ensenada BC, Mexico HS). Sophomore Loren De Medeiros (Long Beach Wilson HS/Grand Canyon, AZ University) scored once and assisted on a pair of goals. Also accounting for goals on the day were sophomores Clara Gomez (El Modena HS) and Celinna Montano (Warren HS), as well as freshman Jill Messersmith (Newport Harbor HS).
