When you're the two-time defending National and State Champions, expectations remain high from start to finish. For the Cerritos College women's soccer team, they extended their unbeaten streak to 32 games (31-0-1) since the 2012 season, as they shut out host Cuyamaca College, 7-0 on Thursday. The Falcons will now travel north and take on Santa Rosa College at 5:00 p.m. next Friday. The win by Cerritos was also their 13th in a row, dating back to last season.
It took the team only nine minutes to get on the scoreboard against the Coyotes and then upped their lead to 2-0 just seven minutes later. But it was a five-goal barrage in the second half that put the game out of reach. Defensively, the Falcons were extremely aggressive and allowed just one shot on goal, as sophomore Adrianna Salazar (Downey HS) earned the win, with freshman Savannah Pilovsky (Fullerton HS) playing the second half.
Three players posted multiple-point games, with freshman Esmeralda Verdugo (Ensenada BC, Mexico HS) accounting for three goals and one assist. She scored the second goal of the game and then added two more late in the game to complete the hat trick. Sophomore Ashley Anaya-Webb (Yorba Linda HS/Cal State Long Beach) found the back of the net just five minutes apart, as she scored in the 64th and 69th minute, while assisting on the first goal of the game off her corner kick.
Sophomore Nayeli Requejo (Bishop Amat HS), who was a 2nd Team All-Far West and 1st Team All-South Coast Conference pick last year, assisted on three goal and also scored one in the 80th minute. Last year, Requejo was second on the team with 26 goals and 66 points. Freshman Cheyenne D'Aquila (El Modena HS) scored the first goal of the season for the Falcons, while freshman Tiffany Castillo (Artesia HS) and sophomore Makayla Mendoza (Palm Desert HS/Pikeville (KY) University) each got on the scoreboard with assists.
