Looking to avenge their earlier season loss to East Los Angeles College, the Cerritos College women's soccer team recorded a convincing 7-0 South Coast Conference win on Friday. The Falcons (13-1-0, 7-1-0) earned their seventh win in a row and responded well to a 1-0 loss to the Huskies (7-4-3, 4-2-2) in their first meeting back on September 30, which snapped the team's 37-match unbeaten streak. Cerritos will now travel to Long Beach City on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. conference game.

Turning in her best performance of the season was freshman Esmeralda Verdugo (Ensenada B.C., Mexico HS), who accounted for three goals, while sophomore Ashley Anaya-Webb (Yorba Linda HS/Cal State Long Beach) increased her state lead in goals with two more to give her 28 on the season She also assisted on four of the Falcons goals. She has taken over the state lead in points with 66. Sophomore teammate Nayeli Requejo (Bishop Amat HS) found the back of the net twice and now has 64 points on the season to go with her 21 goals.

The Huskies, playing without leading scorer Carla Quijada (21 goals), were very aggressive in the first 25 minutes of the contest. They looked to knock the Cerritos players off the ball at every opportunity. But the speed on the edge and passing ability for the Falcons was rewarded in the 29th minute when Verdugo put home a rebound for a 1-0 lead. Anaya-Webb got off the first shot, which was deflected by ELAC goalkeeper Ariadna Flores, but an unattended Verdugo had room to turn and shoot into an unprotected part of the net.

Requejo received a penalty kick in the 38th minute when she was pulled down in the box by Estefani Ruiz and converted her seventh PK of the season. Cerritos seemed to take the air out of the Huskies in the first minute and a half of the second half, when Requejo headed home a crossing pass onto the far side of the net from Anaya-Webb. After losing control of the ball, Anaya-Webb went right back and stole the ball back, which set up her crossing pass.

The Falcon defense withstood a motivated offensive attack by the Huskies, as Blakeley Ficenec used her speed in the open field and found herself going against sophomore defender Clara Gomez (El Modena HS), who won the race down the sideline to the ball. When the ball was out of both of their reach, sophomore goalkeeper Adrianna Salazar (Downey HS) aggressively played the ball and also made five saves to secure the shutout.

Cerritos put an exclamation point in the game with their last two goals in a 1:50 span, as Verdugo scored her third of the game and Anaya-Webb picked up her second.
