The Cerritos College women's tennis team opened South Coast Conference play on Thursday with an 8-1 win over host Long Beach City College. The Falcons (7-1, 1-0) will now travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 2:00 p.m. conference match on Tuesday.

With the Vikings shorthanded, Cerritos picked up default wins in two of the three doubles matches, as well as in one singles match. The lone LB City win came in doubles, as the pairing of freshmen Betty Villareal (Warren HS) and Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) teamed up for the first time and dropped an 8-6 decision.

In singles play, the Falcons posted three strong wins, while two of the matches saw 7-5 scores in the second sets to record the sweep. Freshman Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) moved into the #1 position and registered a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Villareal played her first singles match and won, 6-1, 6-0. Alcasid shut out AnaMarie Cortez, 6-0, 6-0, with sophomores Rianne Ilagan (Bellflower HS) and Staci Gonzales (Vista del Lago HS) were extended to a 7-5 score in their second sets after 6-2 and 6-1 wins, respectively in their first set.
