W. Tennis: One singles, two doubles still playing

The Cerritos College women's tennis team saw one of their singles players and two of their doubles teams advance on the first day of the CCCAA State Championships. The four-day event, taking place in Ojai, will continue Friday morning and run through Sunday.

In singles action, sophomore Samantha Judan (Bishop Montgmery HS), the #6-seeded player from Southern California, posted a 7-6(2), 6-0 win over Viktoriya Shumakova of Glendale College in her Round of 64 match. She will now take on the #10-seeded player from Northern California, Ghia Mahta of DeAnza College at 8:00 p.m. at Buena High School. Freshman Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) suffered a 4-6, 0-6 defeat against Julia Golub of Chabot College, the #5-seeded player from Northern California, in her first match of the tournament.

Judan and sophomore Rianne Ilagan (Bellflower HS) posted a 7-6, 6-4 win in their Round of 64 match against Shannon McElhaney and Anastaysia Trachenko of San Diego Mesa College on Thursday. They have advanced and will play Jacklyn Lee and Mahta of De Anza, the #12-seeded team at 12:00 p.m. at Ventura College.

Also earning a win was Flores and sophomore Natalie Perez (Lakewood HS), who recorded an upset win over #7-seeded Clare Frye and Bailey Wisley of Reedley College, 7-6(5), 6-4. That earns them a noon match at Bonita High School on Friday against the #10-seeded Jaella Conway and Marlayna Durant of Grossmont College. Suffering a loss in their Round of 128 was the tandem of sophomores Staci Gonzales (Vista del Lago HS) and Jessica Alcayde (Cabrillo HS), who were defeated 1-6, 6-3, 4-6 by Kelli Kingsborough and Angel Tran of Santa Rosa Junior College.
